2008 Mazda CX 9 just crossed the 60,000 mile mark and ...

2008 Mazda CX 9 just crossed the 60,000 mile mark and the trans-axle is failing.  My husband believes it is the transfer box (he is a mechanic) but Mazda dealership service department will not discuss with him. Car will drive forward, but begins in reverse and freezes like there is an obstruction behind the car blocking the tires.  If you gas it, eventually it breaks loose and shoots backwards for a few feet (anywhere from 5 to 30) before freezing again.  When it breaks loose, you can hear it loudly release. Any comments/suggestions.diagnostics that we can perform would be appreciated - trying not to drop several thousand to have the whole trans-axle assembly replaced.
